Christian life often poses questions that might seem absurd or even illogical at first glance. One of the most significant and debated issues within the Christian community is the distinction between Jesus as King and Jesus as Savior. In this article, we will delve into how this distinction can impact our relationship with Christ and our daily lives.
The Dichotomy: Jesus the King vs. Jesus the Savior
Romans 10:9-10 (NIV) presents a pivotal passage addressing the relationship between our confession and belief in Jesus: "If you declare with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved." This verse emphasizes the significance of believing in Jesus as Lord and Savior to attain salvation.
However, the Christian community often places more emphasis on Jesus as Savior, which can lead to a dangerous pitfall: "What saves you becomes your King." This implies that the solutions or resources we seek to solve our problems become alternative "saviors," displacing Jesus as the central axis of our lives.
A Shift in Perspective
Here lies a fundamental shift in perspective: What if we reverse the way we typically approach Jesus? Instead of primarily focusing on his role as Savior, we can consider the importance of receiving him as King. By doing so, we align ourselves with his lordship and begin to live according to his teachings.
This process of accepting Jesus as King is rooted in faith. Even though he hasn't yet saved something tangible in our lives, acknowledging him as our Lord motivates us to follow his Word, and as a result, we experience his saving power.
Transformation in Practice
The premise is simple yet profound: If we start obeying Jesus as King through faith, we heed his commandments, and as a consequence, we experience his saving work in the areas we need. Ultimately, this establishes a direct link between his lordship and our salvation.
Conclusion: King or Savior, How Do We Approach Him?
In summary, it's crucial to question how we approach Jesus in our Christian life. Do we seek him as Savior only to receive his blessings? Or do we embrace him as our King, surrendering all areas of our life to his lordship?
While Jesus is already King regardless of our choice, true transformation and the full experience of his salvation occur when we submit our lives to his lordship. It's not just about enjoying the benefits of his kingdom but about yielding to his reign in every aspect of our lives.
Ultimately, this reflection invites us to consider how we've accepted him so far: As King or as Savior? The answer might unveil a deeper and more enriching perspective of our faith.
