This popular saying in Latin America refers to someone who constantly changes their mind, actions, or convictions. It can also describe those easily influenced by others, even changing their own beliefs or faith.
Last week, we talked about "staying firm." In the book of James, the Lord warns us not to be unstable like the waves of the sea, which come and go.
We, as friends, often get frustrated when dealing with someone unstable, who says "yes" and then "no," who commits and then backs out, who promises something and then retracts.
The Lord, knowing human nature, left us this advice:
"When you ask, make sure your faith is in God alone, and do not doubt, for the one who doubts is divided in loyalty and is as unstable as the waves of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind. Such a person should not expect anything from the Lord."James 1:6-7 NLT
This verse is strong. It tells us that we shouldn’t even expect anything from the Lord if we are unstable.
In the final chapter of James, the apostle says:
"Above all, my brothers and sisters, do not swear by heaven or by earth or by anything else. Let your 'yes' be yes, and your 'no' be no, so that you may not fall under judgment."James 5:12 NLT
Here, it also refers to the importance of not being indecisive, that our "yes" should be truly "yes," and our "no" should be "no," to avoid sin and its consequences. When we are unstable, our loyalty is divided.
By not remaining firm in God’s Word, the way we live our daily lives can go against what He desires for us, and we may not fulfill His purpose on earth. This divided loyalty condemns us. We become like those unstable, changing waves of the sea. Living this way means we should not expect anything from the Lord. The Bible itself says: "Do not expect anything from the Lord."
We are either with Christ, and we add, or against Him, and we subtract. If we add with Christ, we will receive all the promises for those who believe in Him. But if we subtract, do not expect anything from Him, or expect a punishment—not because God is a punisher, but because punishment is the natural consequence of our actions.
For today’s reflection, let’s decide not to be fluctuating in what we decide and do. Let us place our faith in God, our Father, who is our firm rock.
